Industrial fans for lab hood exhaust
Lab hood fans, usually Induced Draft fans, are used to create a negative pressure locally within the laboratory hood, to ensure the containment of potentially toxic fumes within the experimental environment and to extract, smoke and fumes to scrubber systems.
The requirement may be to deal with highly toxic or even explosive gases which demands fans built to the highest specifications including explosion-proof (ATEX) where the fan should not precipitate an explosion but will also withstand without rupture, gas ignition taking place with it. Some aggressive fumes and chemicals demand that the fan be constructed from corrosion resistant alloys.
Relevant construction materials
- Carbon Steel
- Stainless Steel
- Hastelloy
- Titanium
- FRP
Common fan features
- Shaft sealing from simple PTFE glands through to nitrogen or water-purged carbon ring seals
- Acoustic and thermal lagging solutions.
- Inlet / outlet silencers as well as complete acoustic chambers
- Inlet Guide Vane, louvre, butterfly or guillotine dampers
- Safety guards and electrical isolators
- Ambient air inlet filters and silencers
Important
Applications involving extreme temperatures, down to -50oC and as high as 850oC, or dealing with explosive, poisonous or corrosive gases, mandate the use of exotic materials such as Hastelloy or Titanium, to ensure long-term reliability and safety.
